When I first founded the Cherab Foundation 18 years ago, my “late talker” boys Tanner and Dakota were 3 and 5 years old. As a newly formed nonprofit, much of the mission of our 501(c)3 was on providing support and information that was desperately lacking to help the verbal disabled, with a focus on apraxia. We were able to accomplish so much due to the charity of professionals and parent volunteers, including national news coverage about apraxia on Inside Edition and a historic first international conference for apraxia with leading experts.
In the past few years, just like many of our children, the Cherab Foundation, along with its mission, has grown. Today The Cherab Foundation continues outreach, as well as our initiatives crowdFunnit, Late Talkers Silent Voices and Pursuit of Research —because they all embrace the starting point of our philanthropy of helping late talkers, and today it’s still the majority of what we do.
Of course, philanthropy isn’t like a business, so we use goals to measure our progress.
Our goals are shared by you; to bring a voice to the verbal disabled in education and in society, to foster compassion and acceptance for those with communication impairments, to research ways to treat, cure and prevent communication impairments with a focus on healthy and benign nutritional therapeutic approaches like fish oils. Validation of what we’ve seen in the group for 18 years with fish oils will help bring a voice to late talkers and bring awareness about apraxia.
The Cherab Foundation is part of CUE through the Cochrane Foundation where we work together to improve evidence-based healthcare. As the president of the Cherab Foundation, and as a consumer advocate, I’m currently serving on a panel with the American Academy of Neurology. In addition, I’m currently working on a sequel book to The Late Talker which I hope to be able to share with you within the next few years.
However, times have changed and so much more is needed today. For example, we learned we can’t have research without money. The Cherab Foundation is still grassroots and 100 percent volunteer-based where 100 percent of the money raised go directly to support our initiatives to help deal with communication impairments, and our area of emphasis is still communication impairments like autism, with a focus on apraxia.
